Our Consultancy Director shares his career story since leaving the army
Published on 09 Apr 2024

Finding the right people to join our team is so important, they can come from any walk of life. Below we share the story of Martin Osman, from leaving the army in 1999 to starting his own business and then becoming our Consultancy Director.

“I joined the army as an apprentice vehicle mechanic in the REME in 1988, at the age of 17, straight from school. When I decided it was time to leave, 11 years later, I picked a career in IT, putting my resettlement fund towards a computer hardware engineers course which promised guaranteed work on completion, or your money back.

The course worked well, and I got a job in IT but after 6 years I could not stand it any longer and had to get back outdoors, so I moved into tree surgery and tree care. Now, 19 years later, I am the Consultancy Director at Chevron Green Services, with a team of Arboriculturists, Ecologists and Environmental Specialists, providing a full range of arboriculture and environmental advisory services.

My initial fears on leaving the forces were based around leaving the security of a job where lots of things were done for you. Finding work, interviews, working for companies and in the corporate environment feels daunting but the resettlement courses and advice I received was really spot on and helped me prepare for success in the big wide world.

Resilience, adaptability, methodical, logical, organised, attention to detail, ability to work well as a team, a sense of humour (although you do need to reign it in a bit, raw squaddie humour is not welcome in all places 😊) and an ability to get on with it are the essential traits and characteristics taught during the forces and they are the corner stones needed to make a career outside of the forces.

Like me, if you don’t get it right first go, there is always time to change from a job you're not enjoying to the job you want to do.”

At Chevron Green Services we have a range of vacancies available from arboriculture apprentice, arborist, business analyst to vegetation management operatives in a variety of locations.
