Field Cow-wheat is one of the UK's rarest plants and only occurs at a handful of sites in southern England.
As it grows on dry grasslands, it has suffered badly in recent years due to climate change and associated heat waves.
Last week, Ruth Frith, Chevron Green Consultancy's Environmental Manager, met with Dominic Price, Director of Species Recovery Trust to work on the annual monitoring of Field Cow-wheat numbers. Chevron Green Consultancy have been Species Ambassador for a number of years, supporting the Species Recovery Trust on an off-network site in the South.
We undertake the monitoring in the summer, and with the support of our operational colleagues in Chevron Green Services, we undertake the management works in winter.
Dominic Price says, "In conjunction with Chevron Green Consultancy, we’ve managed the Portsdown site to create a complex mosaic of scrub, which shelters the plants, and open ground, which allows new seedlings to establish. We're thrilled this year that we’ve managed to stabilise the population and prevent further losses."
