Last week, Tobias Franke, our Operations Coordinator, joined members from the Midlands Collaborative Community on a social value project for the Welcome Change charity based in Birmingham.
The project was based at the Welcome Change community garden in Tile Cross. The garden is home to a colony of bees, a flock of chickens, and various seasonal produce is grown too.
Much of the produce created at the garden helps other projects within the Welcome Change group, such as free meals at their community centre. The project was arranged by Philippa Lee of Colas, also part of the Midlands Collaborative Community. The day consisted of Colas, Crown Highways, WJ, Breedon, and Chevron Green Services volunteers.
On the day, we managed to carry out several tasks, which included :
- Removal of two tree stumps
- Deconstruction of a rotten pergola
- Relocation of a shed and removal of its base
- Several planting beds and polytunnel were cleared of weeds and turned over, ready for planting
- Childrens area had new panels installed on the surrounds
- Willow sculpture was pruned and tied back to keep the shape
Tobias had a great time working collaboratively with the other companies from areas 7 and 9, and the rain didn't stop them from working even though it tried!
Great job to all involved 💚
